In Bloomington, autumn stretches across campus and city spaces. Downtown, the courthouse lawn, IU, and Bryan Park all figure in the local calendar, which runs from early October through Thanksgiving weekend. Arts, performances, campus programs, and seasonal gatherings each have a place in that stretch.
A glass pumpkin and music from around the world
Great Glass Pumpkin Patch
Bloomington Creative Glass Center’s apprentices make the pumpkins throughout the year. For this sale, organizers expect more than 1,000 handmade glass pieces on the Monroe County Courthouse lawn October 10, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until they are gone. Proceeds support the center’s arts education. The patch closes when the pumpkins sell out or at 3 p.m.; event details are on the organizer’s page.
Lotus World Music & Arts Festival
Lotus brings musicians from around the world to downtown October 1 to 4. The opening concert is Thursday evening, Friday and Saturday showcases begin at 6 p.m., and Sunday closes with afternoon concerts. Saturday’s Arts Village is free, while ticket prices vary by performance. The Lotus schedule makes it easier to pick a night and a sound.
Get curious, or get a little spooked
IU Science Fest
Science Fest brings the campus community together around this year’s theme, data discovery. IU lists the event for Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and describes it as an all-ages day. The IU Science Fest site is still adding program details.
Festival of Ghost Stories
The Festival of Ghost Stories is set for October 23, 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Bryan Park, with the Monroe County Public Library as the rain location. The organizers say the stories are best suited to adults, teens, and older children; some may not suit younger kids. Check the Festival of Ghost Stories updates on the day.
R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps: The Musical
Constellation stages R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps: The Musical, a 75-minute mystery about two students who suspect their school play may be cursed. Performances run October 30 to November 15 at Waldron Auditorium. Costumes are encouraged for Halloween weekend shows, with trick-or-treating after the performance. The November 15 show is sensory-friendly and pay what you will. See Constellation’s show page for times and tickets.
A performance, then the holiday lights
Potpourri of the Arts
IU’s African American Arts Institute brings its three ensembles together for Potpourri of the Arts, a music and dance showcase. The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. on November 7 at IU Auditorium. See Potpourri’s event listing for tickets.
Canopy of Lights
Canopy of Lights brings the season to the downtown Square and Kirkwood Avenue on Friday, November 27. The ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m. Visit Bloomington has not posted the 2026 schedule yet, so check its event page before making plans around a particular performance or activity.
Choose your Bloomington evening
Science Fest is the all-ages daytime option. The glass pumpkin sale is for anyone who enjoys handmade art; Lotus suits an evening when you want to choose among several performances. We’d pick the outdoor ghost stories for older kids, or the sensory-friendly Goosebumps show on November 15 if a theater works better. Canopy of Lights is the late-November downtown gathering, though its activity schedule is still pending.
