Who is behind this?

Due to the inadequate, slow, and generally poor quality of Internet services being offered by the large cable and phone companies to the city of Columbus, a true fiber optic network capable of gigabit class speeds with the utmost reliability is needed. With the blessing of the City of Columbus and Public Works department, who have granted access and permits for this fiber optic network, Hoosier Fiber Networks is able to develop and construct the community network. The network construction is funded with the help of private funds so that no tax dollars were used.

How does it work?

The Columbus Fiber Network is being constructed using both aerial installation and directional boring methods. Aerial installation will be used in all areas where utility poles are available. Aerial installation is deploying fiber above ground on existing utility poles or towers, removing the need for underground digging.

The directional boring, or “underground” method is used in areas of the city where utility poles are not directly available, and utilizes the utility right of way, or public easement for fiber installation. With directional boring, installation is done by digging underground pathways along the utility right of way, or easement, and connects from one end of the street to another.

All construction, regardless of which method is used, will take place in public utility easement areas. There will be no construction on residential property unless you choose to order service from GigabitNow.
